So you are thinking of investing in some
good old glass door knobs, fine choice, I
enjoy them very much myself. Mostly because I live in an
old house with lots of original peaces and old hardware,
authentic you might say. But my love for them appeared
suddenly, I had some doors with old, wore out knobs. They
were so unsecure I had to watch out not to get stuck inside
a room, cause those old knobs could break a part or just
spin around the shaft, not going anywhere. So i had to go
to work, I didn’t really want to but my wife always
reminded me of it so I had two options: to get new knobs or
keep fighting with her. And since you can`t win an argument
with your wife ( she is always right ) I started going
through some online catalogs and actually find some
interesting glass door knobs. At first I was a little
skeptical cause the price was about half of those that we
intended to buy as replacements. So first thing I did was
to check out with some friends, ask their opinions. I
didn’t even know some of them already bought them and
actually recommended them. And I finally bought a few, just
to check and see the reactions. Everybody in the family
liked them, they look kind of stylish but were very durable
and reliable. And now, after years of use still look brand
new.
Now let us look back for a bit and share
some facts in their exciting history. These knobs were most
popular in the late 19th century and early
1900`s, some think Art Nouveau period was to blame, there
are many opinions on that one. Later on, more popular door
knobs were made of nickel, brass chrome etc. Most antique
glass door knobs are clear, coloured glass was not so
popular back then, and this in pretty reasonable, can you
imagine your front house door with green handle or red.
That simply does not work. In those early times, one of the
most important place for making glass door knobs and
producing top quality glass in general was in Bohemia,
located in the modern Czech Republic.
Glass door knobs are
very popular even today and because of that should be
pretty easy to find, you can check some hardware stores
around you. But of course, one of the most powerful places
today is the internet, you can find all you need plus more.
You can also find ton of important informations, like what
design you should go with, how is suits your door and your
house in general. If I had to choose between running around
from store to store, asking a bunch of questions and simply
sit in your chair, plug in the computer, with bunch of
informations in front of you; i`d definitely go for the
second.
